Mashabela compared emotional wellbeing to relationships, warning against unhealthy dating habits.

COMEDIAN, Mashabela Galane says modern relationships have become increasingly difficult, with many people struggling to build lasting connections.

Speaking during a recent podcast, the 51-year-old said many men are finding it hard to meet women they can marry or build serious relationships with.

The stand-up comedian and businessman is best-known for pioneering Sepedi comedy often using humour to reflect on the cultural shock experienced by people from rural Limpopo adapting to life in Joburg.

During the discussion, Mashabela also opened up about depression and how he managed to overcome it.

"Mentally when you are at a happy phase, you can tell that you're out of that dark place. There's a point when you can tell that here, I'm in a dark place," he said.

"I was telling someone that what I'm doing now I must continue with it because when things go well you must keep them like that, you mustn't confuse them."

"When you sleep around with people, you collect a lot of things that can block your things in life. There's someone you'll find yourself dating and then you see your money getting finished.

"Sometimes, check your surroundings, like higher beings and the people you get intimate with," he said.

He said infidelity can also become costly and dangerous.

"Everything is transactional now. When you get someone in the club at the AMs and they say they love you, it's a problem," he said.

Mashabela revealed that he once broke up with his partner before reconciling with her, adding that relationships and marriages today have become more complicated.

"Marriages are upside down. Some people make marriage, love easy but others are complicated," he said.

He believes many men give up too quickly when relationships become difficult.

"They don't know there's nothing out there, the streets are rough. They think there's a second option," he said.

Mashabela also said blended families often come with emotional challenges, adding that many people enter relationships carrying unresolved emotional wounds.
