FAMILY, friends, colleagues and fans gathered at Jack Botes Hall in Polokwane on Saturday, 25 July, to bid farewell to one of Mzansi's most loved actors, Seputla Sebogodi, before he was laid to rest at Silicon Cemetery.

The 63-year-old television, film and theatre icon died on 15 July after suffering complications related to diabetes.

According to his family, he collapsed while working on one of his projects in Limpopo and later died at a hospital in Mokopane.

Before his funeral, Sebogodi was honoured at two memorial services, one at Jack Botes Hall in Polokwane and another at the South African State Theatre in Pretoria, where fellow actors, friends and industry leaders celebrated his remarkable contribution to the entertainment industry.

Veteran actor Jerry Phele was among those who paid tribute to the screen legend, describing him as a mentor, a gifted performer and a proud champion of the Sepedi language.

Speakers described Sebogodi as a humble man who opened doors for young actors from Limpopo and encouraged them to embrace their mother tongue instead of being ashamed of it.

But behind the scenes, the family was torn apart by a bitter burial dispute.

Sebogodi's siblings wanted him buried next to his late mother at Makgopeng Cemetery in Ga-Mothapo, while his children insisted he be laid to rest at Silicon Cemetery in Polokwane.

His elder sister, Mary Kau (67), previously told Daily Sun the family had been left in the dark.

"The family hasn't reached out to us. We still haven't seen our brother. We still don't know which mortuary he is in. Where we are standing, we know the marriage is not valid because no lobola was paid," said Kau.

Despite the family's objections, Sebogodi's children still planned to bury him at Silicon Cemetery.

Tributes continued to pour in throughout the week, with many describing Sebogodi as a legend whose talent inspired generations of actors. Colleagues also praised his dedication to preserving and promoting the Sepedi language through his work.

Paying his final respects, Limpopo MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture Jerry Maseko said Sebogodi's legacy will continue to inspire generations of artists.

"Seputla Sebogodi dedicated his life to telling our stories with dignity, passion and excellence. His contribution to the arts will never be forgotten, and his legacy will live on through the many lives he touched," said Maseko.
