She said: “The outcome sends a clear message that corruption, criminality and any form of collusion with criminals have no place within the South African Police Service.”

Matjeng’s dismissal is the latest development in the widening investigation into allegations that some police officers had close ties with Matlala, who has been linked to organised crime and is facing several criminal investigations.

The case has put the SAPS under pressure to stamp out corruption within its ranks as police leadership continues efforts to restore public confidence by taking decisive action against members who abuse their positions.

The SAPS said it remains committed to ensuring that officers who betray their oath of office are held accountable.
