TEACHING and learning came to a halt at Mbuyiselo Secondary School in Mandeni, northern KZN, as parents and pupils protested outside the school on Friday, 13 March.

The march, which caused a complete disruption, followed an ongoing shortage of teachers.

It is alleged that since September 2025, some subjects have not had teachers.

School Governing Body (SGB) chairman Xolani Manqele told Daily Sun the school only has 10 teachers, in fact, it's supposed to have 16.

He said there is a teacher shortage for four subjects: dramatic arts, mathematics literacy, life science, and pure mathematics.

"The mathematics teacher is on maternity leave and hasn't been replaced, the teacher for dramatic arts was transferred to another school in September 2025, and until today, that teacher hasn't been replaced," said Manqele.

"KZN Department of Education must get up and do something about this matter. Soon, the year will end. How will our kids pass to the next grade, as they are not taught?"

Manqele said they met with the district on Tuesday, 10 March, about the issue.

It promised they had done their part and were waiting for the provincial department to intervene.

Daily Sun sent an enquiry to KZN Department of Education spokesman Muzi Mahlambi in the morning after the protest began.

WhatsApp messages sent to him were read, but there was no response.

A follow-up call and message were sent in the afternoon, but there was still no response at the time of publication.
