TRIBUTES have been pouring in for media personality Maria McCloy following news of her passing.
Maria passed away at Milpark Hospital in Joburg on Tuesday evening, 12 May from heart failure.
She was 50 years old.
Her family confirmed the heartbreaking news in a statement, describing her as a vibrant and creative soul who touched many lives through her work and presence.
The media personality, known for her work as a DJ, curator, publicist and fashion designer, leaves behind a lasting legacy in the creative industry.
Radio and TV presenter, Penny Lebyane shared how difficult it has been to process the loss while still having to continue with work.
"At some point I must bath and go do a live TV show today. Staring at my phone, scrolling through all the messages about Maria McCloy is just devastating. I honestly wish I could just sit here and do nothing right now because how am I expected to?" she said.
Journalist and radio presenter, Redi Tlhabi described Maria as a kind soul whose loss will be deeply felt.
"You were so lovely, Maria. A big loss for arts and culture. A huge void for your many friends and family. Go gently, Maria McCloy. The one and only, Maria Podesta," she said.
Playwright and poet, Napo Masheane reflected on her recent memories with Maria, saying the loss feels unreal.
"Unbelievable, far too soon, far, far too soon. What a heartbreaking loss to the industry, to all of us who shared laughter, stories, stages and passing moments that now suddenly feel sacred. Words are failing us.
"We had just shared such a beautiful time at the SBYA announcement and then crossed paths again at the Marble Family Fest… alive in conversation, in laughter, in presence. Yoh, life. Tjoooooo. Rest well, Queen. I will hold dearly that gentle conversation between us about our shared love for Lesotho, our roots, our remembering, our belonging. May the ancestors receive you with song, with light and with the warmth you gave so freely to this world," she said.
Lifestyle brand Africarise Store also paid tribute, describing Maria as a guiding force and cultural figure.
"The tragic and sudden passing of Maria McCloy has left the Africarise family heartbroken. Maria was a mentor, a cultural icon, a lover of this dynamic city of Joburg and a generous soul with an endless sense of wonder and optimism.
"We at Africarise will miss her terribly but will never forget her impact. Robala ka kgotso kgayitsedi," the brand said.
Jewellery designer, Koketso Ditsala Mohlala shared how Maria played a key role in her career.
"Rest in Power, Maria. Maria plugged me with so many amazing projects, including Lucky No7 for Netflix. The very first corporate gig she connected me with is what allowed me to buy my first car. She'd always say, ‘Ditsala, this is good money. Don't disappoint me. I trust you.' And of course, she never let me forget that I owed her my pink cardigan at SA Fashion Week.
"She even popped by to say hello at our Joburg PopUp on Saturday. That was just her - present, warm, and full of love for the people she believed in. The creative industry is mourning a true gem. Thank you for everything, Maria. Your beautiful, selfless soul will never be forgotten. May you rest in power, sis," she said.
