DURING his visit in KwaThema, Ekurhuleni, President Cyril Ramaphosa took time out to visit the family of struggle hero and one of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) founders, Chris Dlamini.
He met the Dlaminis on Khumalo Street where he had a conversation with them.
Christopher Ndodebandla “Chris” Dlamini (1944–2009) was a prominent South African trade unionist and liberation struggle icon who served as the founding First Deputy President of Cosatu from its historic launch in 1985 until 1994.
He played a monumental role in uniting fractured anti-apartheid labour forces into a powerhouse union federation.
Before Cosatu existed, he was the president of the Federation of South African Trade Unions (Fosatu) from 1982 to 1985, using his position to steer crucial unity talks.
Dlamini started off as a shop steward at Kellogg’s in Springs during the 1970s.
He went on to lead the Sweet Food and Allied Workers Union (SFAWU) and became the founding president of the Food and Allied Workers Union (Fawu) when affiliates merged in 1986.
During the interaction with community members, some asked for the title deeds.
The President was happy to interact with abahlali, appreciating the love and the warmth he received. Little kids also ran to the President to greet him.
