A remarkable young South African has earned international recognition after being selected for the highly competitive 2026 Yale Young African Scholars(YYAS) program - an achievement that places them among the world's most promising future leaders.
The Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS) program, hosted by Yale University in the United States, is renowned for identifying and nurturing exceptional high school students from across the globe. Each year, thousands of applicants from over 40 different African countries compete for a limited number of places, with selection based on academic excellence, leadership potential, and a demonstrated commitment to making a meaningful impact in their communities. The Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS) is an intensive academic and enrichment program designed for African secondary school students who plan to pursue tertiary education and wish to make meaningful impact as young leaders on the continent.

This year's local recipient hailing from Randburg - Tsebo Masentle Mofokeng, a driven and intellectually curious learner, stood out for their outstanding academic record, critical thinking abilities, and passion for addressing real-world challenges. Their application showcased not only a strong foundation in their chosen field of interest but also a clear vision for how they hope to contribute to positive change both locally and globally.
During the program, the learner will engage in an intensive academic and leadership experience alongside peers represented from 42 countries. The curriculum includes university-level lectures, collaborative problem-solving, and discussions led by Yale faculty and global experts - providing a platform for deep intellectual exploration and cross-cultural exchange.
Reflecting on the achievement, Tsebo expresses excitement about the opportunity to learn from world-class academics and connect with like-minded peers. "Iam immersed with overflowing gratitude to be given this opportunity, from a world class university no less. I'll be impatiently waiting for what's to come from such an experience, whether it be broadening my knowledge or polishing new skill sets. I'm ready for the journey ahead.", shares Tsebo.
A current Grade 10 learner at UCT Online High School, the learner credits their flexible and future-focused education for helping them cultivate the independence, discipline, and global outlook needed to succeed on an international stage.

This accomplishment not only highlights the learner's individual excellence but also underscores the growing presence of South African youth in global academic spaces. As they prepare to embark on this prestigious journey, they serve as an inspiring example of what can be achieved through dedication, curiosity, and a commitment to lifelong learning.
