Following the endless string of racism and racial tension in schools, I can't help but raise this as a point of concern.
Recently, Hoerskool Jan Viljoen in Randfontein had to appoint an independent team to investigate racism allegations at that school.
Reports suggest the school had been under heavy scrutiny after several videos of a brawl between black and white pupils went viral on social media, along with voice notes in which defamatory language, including the k-word, were used.
I believe racism is a moral catastrophe and should be rejected with the contempt it deserves.
I must also admit it is always a good experience to see a united South Africa during Heritage Month.
The big mistake we mostly make is to embrace one another only during the campaigns aimed at fostering social cohesion. Soon thereafter, we go back to our usual ways of discrimination - based on race, culture or ethnicity.
The fact that we are of different colours and speak different languages, should not give us the wrong knowledge that we are not one.
At the end of the day, we are all one race - the human race.
