Nurses need to do better! - Elton Harris

South Africa’s healthcare system is deteriorating every year.

South Africa's healthcare system is deteriorating every year.

And the improper conduct of nurses and doctors is a matter of serious concern and a subject for discussion.

Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital in Joburg is just one example, in many cases of what Motsoaledi was talking about..

Recently, pregnant women at Rahima Moosa were seen sleeping on the floor in a video that went viral.

Following the incident, Gauteng health MEC Nomathemba Mokgethi said: "I am astounded that a hospital CEO is not full-time at the hospital to ensure everything runs smoothly."

Women who are at a high risk of getting complications need closer monitoring.

Therefore, such kind of conduct discredits the healthcare profession.

According to the South African Nursing Council, nurses are at all times expected to observe and apply ethical principles. Among other things, this includes acting fairly equitable related to access of healthcare. This is by means of applying positive emotions that will benefit both the nurse and healthcare user.

As a civilised society, we must not allow impunity to prevail.

If this problem is not taken seriously, then our healthcare system will degenerate to something else.

Let us take heed of what Abel Pienaar once said: "The lack of investment in clinical-specialisation both in the public and private sectors, puts additional pressure on an already shrinking pool of expertise. If we don't train and educate these healthcare professionals, we run the risk of producing nurses with mediocre competency, inevitably resulting in sub-optimal patient care." Elton Harris
