Masemola’s tough task ahead - Andires Monyane Sedibeng

President Cyril Ramaphosa should be commended for appointing General Fannie Masemola as the new national police commissioner.

President Cyril Ramaphosa should be commended for appointing General Fannie Masemola as the new national police commissioner.

The public has been worried that the SAPS should appoint a seasoned police person and not a politically inclined individual.

The president has done exactly that. Few observations regarding the first speech by the commissioner to the media.

Ramaphosa highlighted the need for public engagement and to regain its confidence in the police service.

He further coupled that with the need to re-look of the moral and the integrity of the police personnel in general. For me that was a right path to take for the service excellence and enhancing the core function of preventing, combating, investigating and protecting the inhabitants within and outside the country.

Masemola should establish a good relationship between the community and the police.

He tapped on the Batho Pele principle, the police code of ethics and conduct and public approval.

He also has his own priorities, which include gender-based violence, the DNA backlog and violent protests, among others.

His approach is hybrid as it calls all of us to establish a support-base approach for him to carry his mandate through.

As an experienced cop, Masemola is familiar with visible policing and how to deal with operational dynamics.

Give police management and the president benefit of the doubt in repositioning the service.
