Every little drop counts - Sinethemba Madolo

The answer to South Africa’s water challenges is in a place where it can’t be seen, right under our feet.

The answer to South Africa's water challenges is in a place where it can't be seen, right under our feet.

It's a well-known fact that South Africa ranks in the top 30 of the world's driest countries, with very little rainfall and depleting water resources. In South Africa, March is Human Rights Month and in the water sector, this month is designated as Water Month to put to the fore all water issues.

In the same context, it points to the fact that water is a fundamental human right. This year's theme as per UN-Water is "Groundwater, making the invisible visible", an apt theme as that is where part of the solutions to the country's water woes lie.

Groundwater is not entirely ignored as some home and farm owners are known to use it.

Many of Mzansi's indigenous communities rely on groundwater, while many towns, about 320 towns, also depend on groundwater as the primary source of supply in conjunction with surface water.

South Africa is a water scarce country, and every drop counts.
