Media personality Lawrence Maleka has addressed skin bleaching speculation after his lighter appearance at the Metro FM Music Awards.

Media personality Lawrence Maleka has found himself at the centre of online speculation after his appearance as host of the Metro FM Music Awards in Durban on Saturday, 25 April 2026.

Viewers took to social media, suggesting his complexion appeared noticeably lighter, with some attributing it to possible skin bleaching. As images from the event continue to circulate, the conversation has gained momentum across digital platforms.

The 36-year-old Soweto-born presenter is well known for hosting Clash of the Choirs South Africa on Mzansi Magic, where he replaced Bonang Matheba for the third season in 2016. He has also hosted Big Brother Mzansi and most recently took to the stage for the Metro FM Music Awards 2026.

Many viewers pointed out that his face appeared lighter than usual, with some suggesting it could have been makeup that did not match his natural skin tone, while others speculated about skin lightening.

Responding to the online buzz, Maleka addressed the comments with humour in a message of gratitude, joking about his appearance.

“Thank you South Africa, Metro FM Awards, the artists and performers SABC 1, the crew and teams in production, our associated sponsors and Nandos for the makeup,” he said.

When fans directly asked whether he had bleached his skin, he dismissed the claims, saying:

“You think I would tamper with the melanin, nectar from the Gods passed on from MmeMaleka and NtateMaleka?”

He added that despite the online chatter, he has been receiving overwhelming support and is not taking the criticism to heart.

“For all the times you guys show love, I was due a little roast. It’s love,”

When Daily Sun contacted his team for further comment, they indicated they would respond to the enquiry.
